For a couple wanting the raw romance of surf and storms, this is their Great Lake bivouac. The narrow interior of this condo (22’ by 62’) plays with all the elements: reflected light, shifting sands, and the rhythmic scouring of wave and wind.
The space features a light trough for daylight to penetrate two stories beside a reflective wall. We sculpted recessed fissures to break the plane, like winter ice sheer piled on the beach. At the foyer, this slot of sunlight forms a passage. Chunky stair treads climb like a boardwalk up through embedded beach grass panels.
The surface under foot—offset bond travertine—is as changeable as the sand and shore just outside. Habitation is anchored, both in the kitchen and master bedroom/bath, with custom-mannered cabinetry. Eating and sleeping surfaces find purchase in simple, elegant expanses of cherry veneer.
Through the core, salvaged wine cask redwood wraps the stairway and master bath, visible from the tub. Our table designs—aqua glass and cherry wood—keep the primal forces of this wild beach site ever close at hand.
