betweenearth&sky

This residential design, done in partnership with David Salmela, challenges the open planes of sky and earth with bold facades of simple geometry. Borrowing elements from Danish farmhouses, the home ranges around three courtyards: one working courtyard with greenhouse and potting area for the owners' raspberry fields, an entry courtyard, and a private bedroom courtyard.

The facade beside the chimney is a light scoop. Positioned on a true north-south axis, it scoops the morning sun and reflects it down through skylights into the farmhouse. In the evening, light pouring out from the house reflects up on the wall as a beacon for guests approaching from the west.

Viewed from outside, it lures guests in through a winding, indirect route of delayed gratification. From inside, it offers views to the different wings of the home, anchoring it with the hearth.
